Viola Léger
1930-2023
When an author and a character meets an interpreter, that’s how the magic operates! That's the story behind La Sagouine. Antonine Maillet created a masterpiece by writing La Sagouine, but who would have thought that this larger-than-life character would succeed, thanks to the talent of Madame Viola Léger, to touch the collective memory of a whole people!
Surprisingly, Ms. Léger became an actress almost by accident, all thanks to Antonine Maillet who gave her the title role in La Sagouine. Thus was born a legendary character, a humble Acadian housekeeper who tells her hectic life with humour and dignity. She performed the piece for the first time in 1971 and then, in both official languages, in Canada, the United States and France. His performance earned him the Dora Mavor Moore Award. Since 1993, she spent her summers in the Pays de la Sagouine, where she played her character.
In addition to La Sagouine, Ms. Léger has played in various plays, including from Michel Tremblay, Michel Garneau, Tennessee Williams and Federíco Garcia Lorca. In 2001, the Académie québécoise du théâtre awarded her the Best Actress Mask for her performance in Grace and Gloria by Tom Ziegler.
Ms. Léger was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989. Her singular talent has earned her many awards and honours: the 1995 New Brunswick Government's Award of Excellence in the Arts, Order of the New Brunswick -Brunswick in 2007 and four honorary doctorates. She was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 1991, member of the Order of Francophones of America in 1998 and Knight of the Order of the Pléiade in 2004. From 2001 to 2006, Ms. Léger sat in the Senate, where she emphasized the importance of artists in our society.
Viola gave life to La Sagouine and by the same token, she gave in her way hope to Acadia ... all of a sudden, on a stage, there was a character shouting with truth who said aloud what that people thought in a whisper. Viola Léger did not play the Sagouine, she was the Sagouine.
In addition, Viola has inspired several generations of artists to choose the arts as a trade, a theatre teacher for many years, Ms. Léger has transmitted her love of the stage and the sacred to the majority of artists that can be seen on different Acadian scenes and elsewhere today.
Ms. Léger retired from public life in 2017, and died on January 28th 2023. -

Antonine MailletAll the characters of Île-aux-Puces and the texts they interpret are from the work of Antonine Maillet. The Larousse dictionary defines her as "Cantor of l’Acadie", because all her work recounts the stories of her people, its laughs and its sorrows, its setbacks and its successes, its dreams, its aspirations ... Antonine Maillet has made l’Acadie known to the world.
Ms. Maillet is a recipient of the Prix Goncourt in 1979 for her book Pélagie-la-Charrette.
Prolific author, it is hard to say how many books Antonine Maillet wrote without being wrong. Among her most famous pieces, La Sagouine, is published by Leméac in 1971. -

History
The Pays de la Sagouine celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022. The Pays de la Sagouine is a theatrical village and opened in 1992 on a small natural island in the middle of Bouctouche Bay. The Pays de la Sagouine is foremost a meeting place where the imagination of a great Acadian author, Antonine Maillet, gives life to many characters, all more endearing than others.
This tourist attraction is unique in Canada because it comes entirely from a literary work, that of the Acadian writer Antonine Maillet, novelist and playwright of international reputation. Originally from Bouctouche, Antonine Maillet is the author of the famous Sagouine and many award-winning novels in Canada and elsewhere. The author has also won the highest literary distinction, the Prix Goncourt, for her novel Pélagie la charrette.
Le Pays de la Sagouine is a non-profit organization with more than 150 employees. A board of directors, , made up of people from surrounding communities, serves as a committee that advises Pays de la Sagouine's managers. Its mission is to celebrate l’Acadie through the imaginary world of Antonine Maillet.
As one of the largest Acadian employers of the performing arts, Pays de la Sagouine is an ambassador for Acadia and a gateway to the world where visitors come to know our culture and our joie de vivre. The Acadians come to recognize each other by celebrating this same joy of living. With the character of La Sagouine, it represents the ultimate pride and origin of the inspiration of a people.
Since opening, it has welcomed over 1.5 million visitors and is the economic engine of tourism in the greater Kent area, bringing many economic benefits to the region. -
Christmas Dinner-TheatreOur Christmas dinner show series is without a doubt one of our most popular activities. Come celebrate with the characters from Le Pays de la Sagouine who will make you laugh, cry and applaud with our brand new holiday show.
Please note, the show is presented in French.

La SagouineLa Sagouine, one of the great characters created by Antonine Maillet, became the spokesperson of a whole people. This woman, of modest origin, has an implacable logic and a pure and direct look on the world.
Through old, rare and poetic words, it brings us back to a primordial thing: human dignity.
Since the creation of La Sagouine's character in 1971, this text has quickly become a larger-than-life phenomenon. The play was performed in French and English in Canada as well as in French-speaking Europe. With the words of Antonine Maillet, , which focus on the identity of a people, and with the voice and presence of extraordinary actress Viola Léger, La Sagouine has crossed borders and cultures. Viola Léger retired from public life in 2017, and passed away in February 2023. The character of La Sagouine is not currently cast in Le Pays' programming.

A typical visit can last between four and eight hours. Your admission is valid for two consecutive days if you'd rather split your visit. Outside of the AKADI LUMINA experience, there are things to see and do all day.
How to ensure I am comfortable during the visit?
Shirt and shoes are mandatory. We recommend comfortable walking shoes, a refillable water bottle, and sunscreen. Dress according to the season, but please note that the temperature can vary by about ten degrees on Île-aux-Puces versus the mainland, depending on the weather, it is wise to bring a sweater or light coat. Reusable water bottles, sweaters and sunscreen are available for purchase at the gift shop.
Does the visit have to be done on foot?
To help you get around, during your visit, we offer a shuttle service to Île-aux-Puces on a golf cart. Note that due to the temporary floating walkway, our accommodation capabilities may be limited. If you are concerned, we invite you to contact us in advance at 1-800-561-9188 to see how we can accommodate your needs.
